I recall writing that passage and thinking about the person reading it—the one with the keys in their hand. I hoped it would speak to the power in us to stop at any point.
And the other passage about defending your sobriety like you used to defend your drinking came from a personal win I had in early sobriety when my 21 yo son's friend asked me to grab him some beer next time I passed a liquor store. Not his fault, old habits and all. I told him I wouldn't be stopping there anymore for myself or for others, not until I got a handle on this thing. I realized later that I had said no—right there on the spot—full of fear and everything. And I did it with grace. I knew I was on my way then.

Of all the terrific things in this essay, this resonated with me so strongly: “Six months sounded fake.” I dismissed someone who said she had that when I was new. She had to be lying. I talked to the person with six days instead. Still couldn’t imagine getting that, but it seemed closer to possible.
